Hens and Chicks in a Coop

Now, take a gander at this image. This here, y’all, is a picture of hens and chicks in a coop. I gotta give it to these birds, they are born knowing what to do. That’s some real instinct ain’t it. Do you all know the difference between a hen and a chick?

Hen vs. Chick

Well, for those of y’all who don’t know, lemme break it down for you. A hen is a female chicken, they lay eggs and take care of the chicks. Meanwhile, a chick is a baby chicken, who will grow up to be a rooster or a hen. There’s a ton of different breeds, but the difference between the two is the chicken’s age and gender.

So, let’s get back to the question at hand. What came first, the chicken or the egg? Now, this is a real headscratcher. It’s like asking, which came first, the baby or the mother? Now, we all know that scientifically, a baby is only possible through a mother, and therefore, the mother must come first. Similarly, scientists say that birds evolved from reptiles. So, if you go back far enough, far beyond the birds, you will eventually hit reptiles. So, it’s safe to say that the chicken came first.

What Do Y’all Think?

However, there are other theories out there too. Some people believe that there could have been a genetic mutation that led to the development of the chicken from the egg of some other bird species. Others think that the first egg came about from some non-chicken bird-like creature, but then the chicken evolved from that egg.

Either way, none of us was there. The only thing we do know is that those hens in the coop are laying eggs every day, and that chick in the corner will grow up to be a big ‘ol bird. We might never know for sure which came first, but what we do know is this – they are both delicious!

So, during your next cookout, remember to get yourself some fried chicken, deviled eggs or some omelettes.

And let’s never forget to give credit to our feathered friends, the chickens!
